去年翻译了一本书，整个圣诞假期在校对。文学翻译好歹有点稿费，一校对，钱更少了。我们学校老师有时候自嘲：I teach for free. I make money by grading. 如果算上机会成本和各项工作费用，我的情形是：I translate for free. I lose money by proofreading. 校对中，我把不必要的连接词砍掉。中文的逻辑关系常为暗示，而不明说。把这些词砍掉，文字更精炼。幸亏这工作廉价，再怎么砍都不心痛。
莎士比亚曾言：简洁是睿智的灵魂（Brevity is the soul of wit) 。在这个年代，这话似乎更合时宜。而今Facebook很快上市，社交网络风头很劲。从Twitter到微博, 从Facebook到校内，好多都有140字节或字数限制。不知当初设计140字是何讲究。《洛杉矶时报》曾介绍过它的由来：当初德国一位研究人员在家随机打字时发现，大部分用一两句话表达的沟通，字节数多为160。160字节于是成了短信常见的字节限制。
Twitter刚发明的时候，字节数本无限制，当时该公司一开始内部试用的tweet若通过短信传输，超过160字节就要另外发短信，一个月下来短信账单也很怕人。所以后来创业者就决定再留出20个字节供用户写自己的用户名、冒号，于是限在140字节。(参见：Twitter的诞生)
这种短信息服务一出现便大受欢迎。从某种意义上说，它也符合认知负荷的规律，因为人脑子的短期记忆，载不动，许多字。90年代的时候，很多公司热衷于撰写自己的“使命宣言”（mission statement)，不知读者诸君有谁能记得自己所在组织的使命宣言。几年前我在一次会议上听到盖川崎说过一句话，Make a mantra, not a mission statement. "Mantra"就是那种短小精悍让人过目不忘的箴言短句，此说发源于于印度教和佛教，是那种让僧侣们能挂在嘴边念叨的短句。企业里这种短小精悍的广告语，很多读者都能列出几条来，比如苹果公司的Think different. 肯德基的We do chichen right。
无论写tweet， 还是微博，言简意赅最要紧。我的英文还没有操练到那种用140个字节表达很多思想的地步，但是我发觉还是中文好，中文微博里140个字还真能说清不少事。很多时候，我把博客里的一段话抄到微博上，字数超出，我于是大刀阔斧地删除，发现很多旁支错节的修饰语、连接词删掉，丝毫没有影响半点语义。
Ken Smith所著的Junk English中，介绍了一种现象叫bad connections，是指句子中出现的长连接词。connection的意思又指“关系”（例如，I have connections in Beijing. 我北京有人。）
句子中的bad connections, 就好比生活中的交友不慎。这些bad connections 在句子中喧宾夺主。写作者应去长就短，下面是书中举的一些（请读者尽量多用右边的表达，而非左边的，除非你是律师）：
