这组形容词都可表示“不同的”意思。

different   “不同的”。普通用词。指两者在细节上有部分或全部不相似。

1）Different jewellery offers a very different expression of identity.

       (不同的首饰显示非常不同的身份表达 。)

       2）According to the different application, the system can adopt different replication mode.

        （针对不同的应用需求,系统可以采用不同的复制模式。）

distinct   “不同的”、“截然不同的”。 指两事物在本质上有明显的差异或区别，语气比 different 强。

          强调各自有独特的地方，因而有明显的不同之处。

   1) Although they look similar, these two plants are quite distinct.

      （虽然他们看起来相似,这两种植物是截然不同的。

               2) Recent findings suggest that visual signals are fed into at least three separate processing systems in the brain, each

                    with its own distinct function.

         （最近的研究表明,视觉信号至少输入大脑中三个独立的处理系统,每一个都有其独特的功能。）

diverse  “不同的”、“多种多样的”。相当于different and various 的意思。

      1) Successful scientists are often people with wide interests, therefore their originality may have derived from their

            diverse knowledge.

         （成功的科学家们往往是兴趣广泛的人,因此他们的创造性可能源于它们不同的知识。）

       2）The program deals with subjects as diverse as pop music and Beijing Opera.

            (节目涉及从流行音乐到京剧这样形形色色的题材。)

divergent   “不同的”、“分歧的”。事物之间有较大的差异，不可能合到一起。表示观点看法时

               表示彼此之间有分歧，永远不会达成一致。

      1) I was completely confused by the divergent accounts of the two witnesses.

        （两个证人的证词差异很大，我完全被搞糊涂了。）

      2) But there are divergent opinions about the popularity of your new album.

          (但是对你的这张广受欢迎的新专辑，外界有不同的看法。)

distinct

distinctive

注意这两个形容词的区别。

distinct  “不同的”，强调个体之间各不相同。distinctive “与众不同的”，强调有自己的独特特征，

          与别的不同。

        1) Though they are twin brothers, they have distinct personalities.

          （他们虽然是孪生兄弟,但他们的个性截然不同。）

 2) We can tell a robin from a sparrow by its distinctive red breast

           （根据其与众不同的红色乳房我们可以分清知更鸟不同于麻雀。）

        3) Mr. Jackson has a distinctive walking manner, with the right shoulder higher than the left one.

           （杰克逊先生有独特行走方式,右高于左肩。）
