会理会议的主要结果是积极的。通过这次会议，在张闻天、周恩来、朱德等支持下，在四渡赤水中证明是正确的毛泽东采取的在运动中摆脱敌军重兵包围的方针，得到了确认。遵义会议后确立的毛泽东对全党全军的领导地位得到进一步的确立和巩固。

但会理会议也表明，毛泽东获得的这一领导地位也还不巩固，还要经受斗争的考验。毛泽东的权威这时还是相对的，可以挑战的，也有人挑战，还没有形成后来那样崇高的威望。党内有不同意见的争论，对领袖也敢提出不同意见，应该说是正常的，是党内民主所必需的。后来发展到绝对权威，把领袖神化，没有人敢提不同意见，反倒是不正常的，有害的。

对于林彪的信，彭德怀表示了自己的态度。彭德怀在“自述”中写道：“我也批评了林彪的信：遵义会议才改变领导，这时又提出改变前敌指挥是不妥当的；特别提出我，则更不适当。”

但彭德怀也写道：“在会议时我看了这封信，当时也未介意，以为这就是战场指挥呗，一、三军团在战斗中早就形成了这种关系：有时一军团指挥三军团，有时三军团指挥一军团，有时就自动配合。……这次，毛主席在会议上指出，林彪信是彭德怀同志鼓动起来的，还有刘、杨电报，这都是对失去中央苏区不满的右倾情绪的反映。当时听了也有些难过，但大敌当前，追敌又迫近金沙江了，心想人的误会总是有的，以为林彪的信，是出于好意，想把事情办好吧；我既没有同林彪谈过话，而同刘少奇谈话内容也是完全正当的，我就没有申明，等他们将来自己去申明。我采取了事久自然明的态度，但作了自我批评，说：因鲁班场和习水两战未打好，有些烦闷，想要如何才能打好仗，才能摆脱被动局面。烦闷就是右倾。”

1959年庐山会议时，毛主席又重提此事，林彪当场申明“那封信与彭德怀同志无关”，“写信彭不知道”，这时彭德怀才出来说明原委。但是，彭德怀被打成“反党集团”成员时，此事又成了一大罪状。彭德怀在“自述”中总结道：“在这二十四年中，主席大概讲过四次，我没有去向主席申明此事，也没有同其他任何同志谈过此事。从现在的经验教训看，还是应当谈清楚的好，以免积累算总账”。
