吴连登(毛泽东生活管理员)：主席绝对反对浪费，尤其不能浪费粮食。有一次，我给主席送饭，他端饭吃的时候，几个米粒掉到桌子上，他马上捡起来吃了。我当时就多了一句嘴，说：主席，掉桌子上了，不卫生了。主席当时很严肃地跟我讲：不要小看这一粒米，这是对农民的感情。农民苦，不容易，我们就是要提倡勤俭节约、艰苦朴素的精神。

在困难时期，主席除了粮食有定量以外，其它各种票证，比如购货本、棉花票、线票、布票、供应券，他那儿全有。主席说：现在大家都有计划，我也得跟市民们一样，不能特殊。比如到中南海供应科买东西，也要凭主席的票证。

曾文(毛泽东卫士)：主席生活很俭朴，一般保持着普通群众的生活标准。他脑子里考虑的是工人、农民的生活，都跟他们看齐。他吃得简单，住得也很简单。主席住在平房里，房子比较潮湿，墙皮都掉了。工作人员跟他提过好多次，说要给他粉刷一下，他都不同意。他说：这个房子住着挺好的，比广大工人农民住得好，很舒服。全国工农生活都不很富裕，为了让他住得舒服一点而花国家的钱来修，主席不愿意有这样的事情。

张木奇(毛泽东卫士)：抗美援朝期间，有一段时间天气特别热，主席住的四合院没有多少风，整个房子、院子里呼吸的空气都好像是加温的，热得不得了，汗流不止。我们跟工人说了一下，在自来水龙头上装了一个胶皮管，定时在院子里洒点水，可以冷却一下。主席看见了，摆摆手说：不要这样搞了。现在正在抗美援朝，要增产节约。我们没什么可增产的，但是节约大有可为。前方同志们在打仗，打美国鬼子，一把炒面一把雪，后方也要把工作做好。

吴连登：主席这一生，公家的就是公家的，从来不占公家便宜。记得处理刘青山和张子善时，主席看了他们的文件，沉思半天，说：新中国刚刚建立，他们也是一路红小鬼过来的，现在居然搞贪污腐败，变了。为了这个国家、这个民族，要严肃认真地处理这件事。主席批示完，把文件退给秘书的时候，还讲了一句：要下这种决心，首先自己屁股必须干净。主席对身边工作人员要求非常严格。有一次他在中南海办公室搞整风，发现很多问题，主要是少数工作人员占小便宜，要地方上的土特产等。主席很重视这个事情，说：凡是占了便宜的，一律沿路给各省退赔。但是经济上的退赔，不让你们个人负担，全部由我的稿费里出。主席还说：你们这些人，不要以为跟在我身边，就可以想怎么样就怎么样。你们不要打我的旗号。

周福明(毛泽东理发师)：有一次，陕西送来一些小米，报告主席后，他告诉秘书：写一封信，加倍付钱。还让转告地方领导，现在不需要，需要时会派人采购，不要再送了。以后谁还敢再送？所以据我了解，主席没有白吃过人家一点东西。

曾文：我们跟随主席到地方考察和休养的时候，他总是要求我们不抽当地的烟，不吃当地的水果。水果不吃不就烂了吗？他说：烂了你也别吃，放烂了就烂一次，如果你吃了，他们又给你拿上来。主席总的思想是减少经费，不要搞特殊化，不要增加地方的负担。(《党的文献》供稿)
