Mugs
Mugs, also opposed to tankards,were lidless and originally known as 'cannes'-a name which persisted in porcelain for coffee cans, as opposed to cups,which were more bowl-shaped.The earliest patterns seem to have developed from pottery shapes rather than any parallel metalware ,and vary considerably in capacity,though it could be said that they held between a half-pint and a pint.They had the typical rounded bodies and broad,reeded collars of stoneware mugs dating from about 1680 with the added refinement of a beaded rat tail running down the handle. But it was only a short time before they began to follow first the fashion in decoration,and then the purer lines of other silverware,with gadrooning and lobing,and by the end of seventeenth century were miniature lidless tankards in every respect.The only difference was that mugs generally had solid cast silver handles instead of wrought hollow ones.
Silver mugs may well have been used by ladies for their nips of strong ale,and by children for 'small beer' but probably were not used exclusively for alcoholic drinks,but for all manner of hot possets and spiced and herb concoctions.It must not be forgotten that for centuries the only alternative to silver was pottery were liable to release dangerous chemicals if they came into contact with acids in any form.
The custom of godparents giving christening mugs dates only from the ninteenth century,when there was such a demand for them that practically every style,period and decoration was ransacked in order to make original and memorable christening presents.Sadly,many early,plain half-pint mugs were seized and embossed or decorated for this purpose.(jane23-11-2011)
