Jia Qinglin, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, attended the opening ceremony of the 18th African Union (AU) Summit and made an official goodwill visit to Ethiopia from Jan. 27 to Jan. 29. 

Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Zhai Jun said this is the first foreign visit by a Chinese leader in 2012, the Chinese Year of the Dragon, and is of great significance in deepening China-Africa new strategic partnership and promoting solidarity and cooperation among developing countries. 

The AU is the most important and representative inter-governmental organization in Africa and Ethiopia has great influence on the continent. Having profound traditional friendship with China, both of them are the country's important partners in African and international affairs. China-AU comprehensive strategic partnership and China-Ethiopia comprehensive cooperative partnership have witnessed rapid development in recent years. Under new circumstances, the three sides are more than willing to further enhance solidarity and cooperation. 

The China-African Union relations and China-Ethiopia relations are reflections of the friendly and cooperative relationship between China and Africa. In the past more than 50 years, China and Africa always supported each other in their national liberation movements and sincerely cooperated with each other in their development processes and worked with each other in dealing with international affairs, and have established a profound friendship. 

In the 21st century, the establishment and development of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation, especially the successful Beijing Summit of the forum, have started a new chapter of the new strategic partnership between China and Africa. 

The political, economic and cultural cooperation between the two sides have reached unprecedented depths and widths. The exchanges, communications and friendships between the people of the two sides have also strengthened significantly. China and Africa have been strengthening their cooperation in the fields of dealing with global challenges including the climate change, pushing forward reforms of international financial and economic systems and promoting the democratization of international relations for a long period, and have safeguard their common interests effectively. 

The development of the China-Africa relations has exceeded the scope of bilateral relations and is significantly affecting the global development course. 

China always believes that the peace and development of Africa is closely connected with the peace and development of the entire human race and brings opportunities for the global peace and development. International communities should pay more attention to the Africa issue, listen to Africa's voices, respect its opinions, understand its concerns, resolutely safeguard its peace, stability and development and support it to independently solve its regional issues. 

The aim of Chairman Jia's visits in the African Union and Ethiopia is to tell Africa and international communities that China will firmly be with African countries, resolutely push forward the new strategic partnership between China and Africa and make contributions with international communities to promote Africa's peace, development and unity. 

It is worth to note that the Conference Center of African Union built by China has been completed on schedule and the 18th African Union Summit will be held in this center. This Conference Center is an important outcome of the Beijing Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation and a vivid reflection of China's supports to the independent development and unity of Africa. 

It has realized African countries' long-cherished wish and is highly praised by the African side. The center and the long and great Tanzania-Zambia Railway will be recorded in the glorious history of the China-Africa friendship and lighten the past, present and future of the China-Africa relations. 

Strengthening unity and cooperation between China and Africa is an important part of China's general foreign policy and a strategic decision that China will adhere to for a long period. In the course of developing the China-Africa relations, China always sticks to the principle of “sincere friendship, equality, mutual benefit, unity and cooperation, common development,” always makes new innovations according to changes of international situations and China and Africa's situations and keeps injecting new energies into the China-Africa relations. 

China will continue following the trend of the times and steering the general development direction of the China-Africa relations properly, further widen and deepen China and Africa's cooperation in various realms and benefit the people of China and Africa. 

Zhai said that he believes that, with the common efforts of China and Africa, Chairman Jia's presence in the 18th African Union Summit and visit in Ethiopia will make contributions for pushing forward the development of the new strategic partnership between China and Africa and promoting the long-term peace and common prosperity of the world.
