朝鲜国营电视台19号报道了领导人金正日详细死因，指他是因为过度劳累17号在列车上出现急性心肌梗塞，并发严重心脏休克逝世，终年69岁。朝鲜官方公布金正日死前两天巡视的相片，当时健康似乎没有异状。

而照片中金正日和儿子金正恩、以及金正日的妹夫张成泽同时出现。朝鲜官方选择在金正日逝世后发布三人一起的照片别具深意。

朝鲜中央电视台特别报道中指出，频繁的实地考察活动导致金正日的身心过度劳累，导致他17号在列车上出现急性心肌梗塞并并发严重的心脏休克，经抢救无效在当地时间17号早上8时30分逝世．当局在18号进行病理解剖确定了死因。

据朝中社报道，金正日死前两天即是15号曾视察即将开业的朝鲜首家大型超市光复地区商业中心。朝鲜官方公布他当天巡视的照片，健康似乎没有异状。

陪同金正日的还有被称为伟大继承人的三子金正恩、妹妹金敬姬以及妹夫张成泽。张成泽是日韩媒体所指金正日指定辅助儿子金正恩的朝鲜军政实权人物，韩国曾有情报指他作为金正恩姑父对金家父子非常忠心。

而朝鲜媒体在发布金正日死讯时强调，朝鲜人民应在金正日的第三子金正恩的领导下化悲哀为力量克服当前困难。而在232人组成的葬礼委员会中，金正恩据报排名第一。朝鲜全国由17号起至29号全国哀悼，停止一切娱乐活动。而金正日遗体暂时停放在锦綉山纪念宫，预计也会像父亲金日成一样，安葬在那里，20号起开始接受吊唁，但不接受外国吊唁团。遗体告别仪式就在28号举行，29号召开追悼大会。
