The list author says: "When I first arrived in the Middle Kingdom in 2004, I was highly skeptical of Chinese films because, honestly, most things that require a red-star stamp of approval from the Communist Party before they are released into the public usually suck.

   该名单的作者说：“当我2004年第一次来到中国时，我对中国电影高度的质疑，因为老实说，在公之于众之前需要得到CP批准的一个红星印戳的大部分东西通常都很恶心。”

However, after traveling over 56,000 kilometers over the course of 2 years to photograph my new book CHINA: Portrait of a People, and having been force-fed no end of Chinese movies during that long march by coach and train, I have since had the following epiphanies: 1) Chinese cinema is not nearly as bad as Chinese television, which is the modern-day equivalent of water torture; 2) many movie made in China are actually more watchable than the garbage that Hollywood has been releasing the past half-decade I’ve been gone.

   然而，在两年的时间里穿行了多达56000公里，为我的新书《中国：一个民族的影像》拍摄照片之后；在火车和轮船上的度过漫长旅途期间，无休止地刻意观看了许多中国电影之后，我因此有了如下的顿悟：1）中国的电影院并没有中国的电视那般糟糕，中国的电视是当今的“水刑”。2）相比我所看过的在过去五年的时间里上映的好莱坞垃圾影片，许多中国电影实际上更有看头的。

This can probably be attributed to the fact that the Communist Party has finally come to the realization that they need to make better (and less propagandist) movies for a globally competitive market, because they can’t keep banning western movies here forever, as well as the fact that modern Chinese filmmakers have obviously been influenced by said western films.

   这一点可能是归功于CP终于意识到他们需要为全球化的市场竞争制作更好的电影（更少的布道宣传），因为他们将永远不能一如既往的在中国禁播西方电影，同样当代中国电影制作人很明显受到前述西方电影的影响也无法限制。

Nonetheless, many of the movies on this list have been officially banned by the CPC for one reason or another, making it quite impossible for us expats here in China to watch them except through unlawful means, i.e. pirated DVD. Also consider that China entirely lacks any kind of Virgin Megastore or Tower Records where one can buy authentic DVDs.

   虽然如此，在这个名单上的许多电影因为这样或者那样原因被CPC官方禁播，这使得在中国的侨民很难看到这些电影，除非通过非法的途径，比如说盗版DVD。同样，我认为在整个中国都缺少任何一种像Virgin Megastore或者Tower Records一样的能买到正版DVD的地方。

So, as a way for me to assuage my guilt of having paid less then a quarter to that dodgy DVD guy standing in front of Dongzhimen subway station to watch most of the following movies, I have compiled this list for those of you in the west who can actually receive their Amazon.com orders (d*mn you, China Customs inspectors!) so that you may financially support these talented and brave filmmakers until a time that I am able to myself."
