Will Young在埃克塞特大学攻读政治学学位时就初尝表演的滋味。他最初的听众只是停车场里的几辆空车，他喜欢在那儿放声唱自己最喜欢的歌，这是他的朋友和父母以前都没有发现的一面。虽然韦尔·杨在学校的表演中也上过舞台，可他从来没有那样用声音来表达自己。“我总是没有机会对着听众唱自己真正喜欢的歌，因此我就自己一个人在停车场唱。在舞台上我的歌声总是受压抑，我第一次有机会公开表现自己的能力，是在“流行偶像” 节目中唱《点燃我》。
在学校的时候，Will Young参加了一次男生乐队选拔赛，并在乐队中赢得了一个位置。然而，乐队并没有什么发展，他于是把精力放回到了学习上。毕业后，他来到伦敦的艺术教育学校学习音乐剧，并报名参加“流行偶像”节目。
Will Young在参加英国一个名为Pop Idol（流行偶像）的节目获胜者后，从此一炮走红全英国。他不但有英俊的外表，更有迷人的声线和扎实的唱功。之后陆续推出三张单曲唱片，全部都是一上榜就登上单曲榜冠军位置，而且全部都蝉联数周冠军！ 2002年2月Will Young以超过460万的超高观众票选夺得Pop ldol冠军，他卓越的演唱技巧、无敌的个人魅力、和面对尖刻批评勇于辨证的精神，不但征服了英伦甚至是欧洲大众的心。还应邀至白金汉宫为英国女王演唱。2002年2月25日，他的首支单曲《Anything Is Possible/Evergreen》发行后取代了Band Aid 1984年录制的《Do They Know It's Christmas?》的位置而成为英国销量最快的专辑。 Will Young已经先后发行了3张专辑《From Now On》（2002年10月7日）、《Friday’s Child》（2003年12月）和《Keep On》（2005年11月21日），3张专辑共产生了4首冠军单曲和其他5首英国榜前5名的单曲。还为他赢得了全英年度最佳新艺人奖、2004年数字音乐大奖最佳艺人奖以及一系列其他的音乐奖项。英俊的才子都不甘寂寞，2005年，Will Young还参演了BBC影片《Mrs. Henderson Presents》，结果Will Young的演技和歌艺又召来一片的喝彩。在《2009全英音乐奖》中，Will Young获“英国最佳男歌手”提名。
