5、IF

If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make allowance1 for their doubting too;
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or being lied about, don't deal in lies,
Or being hated don't give way to hating,
And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise:

If you can dream -- and not make dreams your master;
If you can think -- and not make thoughts your aim,
If you can meet with Triumph2 and Disaster
And treat those two impostors3 just the same;
If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken
Twisted4 by knaves5 to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,
And stoop and build 'em6 up with worn-out tools:

If you can make one heap7 of all your winnings
And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss8,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings
And never breathe a word about your loss;
If you can force heart and nerve and
sinew9
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
Except the Will which says to them: "Hold on!"

If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue10,
Or walk with Kings -- nor lose the common touch,
If neither foes11 or loving friends can hurt you,
If all men count with you, but none too much;
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds' worth of distance run,

Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,
And ---Which is more -- you'll be a Man, my son!

你仍能镇定自若;

并也容许别人猜疑;

这两种虚幻看作一样;

而绝口不提你的损失;

6、Much to Live For

There is so much I have not been, so much I have not seen. I have not thought and have not done or felt enough -- the early sun, rain and the seasonal delight1 of flocks of ducks and geese in flight, the mysteries2 of late-at-night. I still need time to read a book, write poems, paint a picture, look at scenes and faces dear to me. There is something more to be of value-- something I should find within myself -- as peace of mind, patience, grace3 and being kind. I shall take and I shall give, while yet, there is so much to live for – rainbows4, stars that gleam5, the fields, the hills, the hope, the dreams, the truth that one must seek. I'll stay here -- treasure every day and love the world in my own way!

3、grace: A characteristic or quality pleasing for its charm

7、Of Studies

Studies serve for delight, for ornament1, and for ability. Their chief use for delight, is in privateness2 and retiring3; for ornament, is in discourse4; and for ability, is in the judgment, and disposition5 of business. For expert men can execute6, and perhaps judge of particulars, one by one; but the general counsels7, and the plots and marshalling8 of affairs, come best from those that are learned. To spend too much time in studies is sloth9; to use them too much for ornament, is affectation10; to make judgment wholly by their rules, is the humor of a scholar. They perfect nature, and are perfected by experience: for natural abilities are like natural plants, that need pruning11 by study; and studies themselves, do give forth directions too much at large12, except they be bounded in by experience. Crafty13 men contemn14 studies, simple men admire them, and wise men use them; for they teach not their own use; but that is a wisdom without them, and above them, won by observation15. Read not to contradict16 and confute17; nor to believe and take for granted; nor to find talk and discourse; but to weigh and consider.

Some books are to be tasted, others to be swallowed18, and some few to be chewed19 and digested20; that is, some books are to be read only in parts; others to be read, but not curiously; and some few to be read wholly, and with diligence21 and attention. Some books also may be read by deputy22, and extracts23 made of them by others; but that would be only in the less important arguments, and the meaner24 sort of books, else distilled25 books are like common distilled waters, flashy26 things.

Reading makes a full man; conference27 a ready man; and writing an exact man. And therefore, if a man write little, he had need have a great memory; if he confer28 little, he had need have a present wit: and if he read little, he had need have much cunning29, to seem to know that he doth not. Histories make men wise; poets witty; the mathematics subtle30; natural philosophy deep; moral grave31; logic and rhetoric32 able to contend33. Abeunt studia in mores. Nay, there is no stone or impediment34 in the wit, but may be wrought35 out by fit studies; like as diseases of the body, may have appropriate36 exercises. Bowling37 is good for the stone and reins38; shooting for the lungs and breast; gentle walking for the stomach; riding for the head; and the like. So if a man’s wit be wandering, let him study the mathematics; for in demonstrations39, if his wit be called away never so little, he must begin again. If his wit be not apt to distinguish or find differences, let him study the Schoolmen; for they are cymini sectores. If he be not apt40 to beat over matters, and to call up one thing to prove and illustrate another, let him study 197 the lawyers’ cases. So every defect of the mind, may have a special receipt.

8、 Youth

Youth is not a time of life; it is a state of mind; it is not a matter of rosy cheeks1, red lips and supple2 knees; it is a matter of the will, a quality of the imagination, a vigor3 of the emotions; it is the freshness of the deep springs of life.

Youth means a temperamental4 predominance5 of courage over timidity6 of the appetite7, for adventure over the love of ease. This often exists in a man of sixty more than a boy of twenty. Nobody grows old merely by a number of years. We grow old by deserting8 our ideals.

Years may wrinkle9 the skin, but to give up enthusiasm10 wrinkles the soul. Worry, fear, self-distrust bows11 the heart and turns the spirit back to dust.

Whether sixty or sixteen, there is in every human being's heart the lure of wonder, the unfailing child-like appetite of what's next, and the joy of the game of living. In the center of your heart and my heart there is a wireless12 station; so long as it receives messages of beauty, hope, cheer, courage and power from men and from the infinite13, so long are you young.

When the aerials14 are down, and your spirit is covered with snows of cynicism15 and the ice of pessimism16, then you are grown old, even at twenty, but as long as your aerials are up, to catch the waves of optimism17, there is hope you may die young at eighty.
