Almost all parents in rural Beijing say they have concerns about the safety of the food their children eat, according to a new report.

The research on children's food safety in rural Beijing was commissioned by the Beijing Women and Children's Development Foundation and was released at the 2009 Summit of Children's Food Safety. Researchers spoke to 2,684 children and their parents in 132 villages in 16 districts and counties.

Zhan Xiangdong, director of market research company CTR, said food safety was a problem. "As many as 55 percent of the parents had special concerns about the safety of children's food and 44.2 percent said they were worried about children's food safety," Zhan said.

In addition, one in five families said they had experienced problems with the quality of the food, 69.8 percent of which were about expired food. Milk products and prepared food were the biggest concerns for parents. The quality of powdered milk formulas was highly concerning for families with babies.

"The most serious concerns for parents were whether the food contained harmful substances and if it was produced by trustworthy companies," said Zhan.

About 95 percent of children said they selected food because of its taste, and many said they bought products in small stores. But according to the research, 47.7 percent of food sold in small stores had problems and many were out of date. A total of 46.8 percent of people surveyed said they did not know anything about the law on food safety.

Luo Yunbo, president of the college of food science and nutritional engineering at China Agriculture University, said many families in rural Beijing believed products from famous brands were inherently safe and felt secure about their quality. Luo said many of these families were not aware of their rights.

"The gap between urban and rural areas on people's awareness of children's food safety was due to many reasons, including their incomes and education," Luo said.

China's knack for grouping socially similar people has grown recently with the arrival of the "3S lady". Referring to "single", "seventies" and "stuck", the phrase identifies independent and educated women, around the expected age of marriage but who are still single. They are too easily blamed for the phenomenon. But I have to disagree.

First, I find fault in the notion that well-educated, well-paid and independent single women have excessively high requirements for their Mr. Rights. I have a friend who holds a master's degree, works for a famous IT company and has a great personality. However, she has been rejected twice because the men in her life believed she was too good for them. Should she be blamed because those guys lack confidence?

Second, it is much harder to look for a new relationship than look for the first. Analysts say most 3S ladies have had disappointing relationship and the negative emotions put them off trying a second time. Another friend of mine was dumped by her franc on her 29th birthday last year. She has to start again and with the "3S lady" label, life is tougher.

Finally, analysts say 3S ladies often value career success above personal lives. This is a catch-22 situation because slowing down in a city like Beijing makes them fall behind, and this weakens their image to potential husbands. Society labels women as a weaker group but fails to lower the requirements and the pressures on them.

Surely the fair thing to do now is to note that men are allowed to start their love lives in their 30s, and change the 3S definition to a more radical, "smart", "smoker" and "stunner". Does anyone have a light?

1. By telling experiences of the friends, the author tries to__________.

A. show how to deal with the disappointing relationship.

B. show the difficult situation of the 3S ladies.

C. show the importance of getting married.

D. persuade the 3S ladies to lower their requirements.

2. The underlined word “catch -22” in Paragraph 4 is similar in meaning to________.

A. practical     B. female     C. global     D. hard

3. The author’s friend has been refused two times because ______.

A. she is well-educated, well-paid and independent.

B. she has excessively high requirements for her Mr. Right.

C. the men in her life think she is not as good as they expected.

D. the men in her life lack confidence.

4. Which of the following can best describe the author’s attitude to the traditional notion about the 3s ladies?

   A. negative   B. positive    C. neutral   D. objective

本文主要讲述目前存在的社会现象——3S ladies(单身,七十年代的,还未出嫁的女性),讲述了她们目前所面临的困境。

从文中because the men in her life believed she was too good for them. Should she be blamed because those guys lack confidence? 可知答案是D

  4. A.推理判断题。从第二段I find fault in the notion that well-educated, well-paid and independent single women have excessively high requirements for their Mr. Rights.可知答案是A

About 60 percent of new medical clinics in Tongzhou district have closed because of a lack of medical staff, a new report shows.

The report found that 67 of the 111 clinics that opened in 2008 had stopped operating. Of the 44 that remained open, most employed only one medical worker. Michael Jackson had a 3-D scan(三维图)of him likeness made so he could build a virtual reality version of himself - which could now be used to bring him back in pop videos, films or computer games.

Michael Jackson wanted to build a clone of himself. The star - who died of acute Propofol intoxication aged 50 in June, 2009 - underwent several three dimensional scans in 1996 so a virtual reality 'robotic' twin could be produced.

It is thought the scans could now be used to bring the singer back in pop videos, computer games or even films. The anonymous(匿名的)US businessman who owned the images and has reportedly been trying to sell them for $1 million told Britain's Daily Star newspaper: "The data has been in our archives(存档) since he had the scans. The thing about this data makes him stay at the age of 37 forever, before his nose was disfigured(整形) and when he was at the top of his life."

Meanwhile, it has been revealed Michael's funeral was nearly cancelled at the last minute in a row over its cost. Around $1 million was estimated to have been spent on the funeral, which took place on September 3. Court papers have revealed just three days before the funeral was scheduled to take place, lawyers acting for the 'Billie Jean' star's mother Katherine had filed a request to the administrators of his estate to pay for the funeral bills.

The lawyers stated that if the funeral home and local police department's bills were not paid by the next day, the burial would not go ahead as planned. Administrators were luckily able to pay the bills in time, preventing any delays to the ceremony. Katherine's lawyers admitted the cost of the funeral was high, but added it was: "Entirely commensurate  (相称的)with the decedent's worldwide status as an entertainer and the world's grief(悲伤)over his death."
