考研英语词汇复习（29）

ground
这三个名词常用于表示“原因”的意思。
reason 指解释说明某事、某行为或想法是合理的或正确的理由。
1) You must give me a good reason why you want to quit your job.
（你为什么想辞去你的工作，你必须给我一个好的理。）
2) The only reason that I can give myself for tolerating this job for so long is that I’m rather well paid.
（我之所以容忍这种工作这么久，我能给自己唯一的原因是他们给我的工资相当不差。）
cause 指直接引起、产生或导致某种结果的原因，有较强的因果意味。
1) The police are investigating the cause of the tragic traffic accident.
(警察正在调查造成这起交通事故悲剧的原因。)
2) We must get to the root of the matter and find out the primary cause of the trouble.
（我们了解事情的真相,找出造成这次麻烦的主要原因。）
ground 可与reason换用，但更客观、更具说服力。
1) Their protest has no real grounds; they do not really have anything to complain about.
（他们的抗议没有正当的理由；他们真的没有什么可抱怨的。）
2) We must give priority to agricultural development on the grounds that people cannot work efficiently unless they have enough to eat.
（我们必须优先发展农业，理由是只有当人们有足够的食物食用他们才能更有效率地工作。）
