第一大油田：大庆油田
1959年2月8日是农历正月初一，石油部领导召开会议讨论松辽盆地松基3井的井位，连续三天取得了一致意见。4月11日位于大同镇的松基3井开钻，设计井深3200米。到7月份钻至1050米开始连续取岩心时，由于工具简陋和经验不足，只取出202.51米，但含油显示层3.15米，油砂饱满，气味浓烈，并伴有两次从泥浆中返出原油。经过固井和试油专家以及工人们的紧张工作，9月26日16时，随着“开阀试油”，松基3井放喷的原油大量涌出。由于松基3井的提前完钻试油，从而宣告了松辽盆地第一个油田的诞生。9月27日，黑龙江省委书记欧阳钦和李范五、李剑白等领导到大同镇祝贺，欧阳钦提议把大同镇改名为“大庆”，既有对发现油田的肯定，又有国庆10周年之意。石油部部长余秋里得知欧阳钦的提议后，说道：“好么！大庆好么！”随后，石油部经党中央批准，抽调全国的勘探队伍到大庆开展了石油大会战，并将油田命名为大庆油田。大庆油田在创造连续27年稳产5000万吨的辉煌后，2010年为4000万吨，尽管产量逐年递减，但仍为我国第一大油田。
第二大油田：长庆油田
长庆油田位于鄂尔多斯盆地(曾称陕甘宁盆地)。油田盆地东起吕梁山，西抵六盘山、贺兰山，南到秦岭北坡，北达阴山南麓，跨越陕西、甘肃、宁夏、山西、内蒙古等五省区，面积37万平方千米。1969年10月，新成立的燃料化学工业部根据当时“抓革命、促生产、促工作、促战备”和“三线建设”的需要，决定以玉门石油管理局(玉门油田)为主筹备组织陕甘宁石油会战。随着1970年8—9月间钻探的庆8井、华参2井、庆1井等先后出油，为大规模的石油会战奠定了基础。其中9月26日位于庆阳县马岭的庆1井喷出工业油流，日产原油30多吨，成为在陇东地区钻获的第一口自喷油井，因而有了长庆油田发现井之称。由于石油会战的指挥部最初设在一个名叫长庆桥的小镇，油田因此以“长庆”得名，又暗合了对大庆油田的延续与期望。2010年，长庆油田产油气当量3500万吨，成为我国第二大油田。
第三大油田：渤海油田
渤海油田位于渤海湾盆地。渤海湾盆地面积20万平方千米，其中2/3以上为陆地，渤海油田面积58327平方公里，是我国第三大产油区。1965年2月，位于渤海湾盆地的大港油田组建海洋石油勘探室，1966年8月石油部在天津塘沽成立海洋石油勘探指挥部。1967年6月14日，海洋石油勘探指挥部3206钻井队用自制1号固定桩基钢钻井平台，首次在渤海钻成海1井，日产原油35立方米，标志着渤海发现的第一个油田。1973年，大连造船厂建造了我国自行设计的渤海1号自升式钻井船，随后又陆续建造了渤海3、5、7号钻井船和渤海9号生活供应船，另从国外引进了渤海2、4、6、8号钻井船，自此“渤海”二字在海洋石油勘探区域指代中广泛使用。到1978年8月，海洋石油勘探指挥部相继打井100口，发现9个含油构造和3个海上油田，更名海洋石油勘探局。1983年3月22日，海洋石油勘探局撤销，组建中国海洋石油总公司渤海石油公司，渤海油田正式得名。2010年，渤海油田油气当量3250万立方米，折合原油总量超过3000万吨，成为国内第三大油田。
第四大油田：胜利油田
1955年，国家决定对华北平原地区展开区域性的石油普查。从1956年到1961年，钻探了多口基准井，其中在东营凹陷北部发现了东营、辛镇背斜构造和胜利村鼻状构造，勘探目标逐步定位在黄河三角洲地区。1961年4月16日，在东营村附近打的华8井，首次见到工业油流，日产原油8.1吨，从而拉开了在华北盆地找到油田的序幕，成为胜利油田的发现井。1962年9月23日，在东营构造上打的营2井，获日产555吨的高产油流，这是当时全国日产量最高的一口油井。胜利油田始称的“923厂”即由此而来。1964年1月15日，石油部决定组织华北石油会战。华北盆地位于燕山以南、太行山以东、泰安以北地区，面积17万平方千米。会战期间进行了坨庄－胜利村战役。1965年1月25日，在胜利村构造上，钻井队打的坨11井，发现了85米的巨厚油层，试油日产1134吨，得名“胜坨油田”。会战历时三年，先后发现了胜坨、东辛、郝家、纯化、尚店等油田，使“923厂”成为当时我国第二大油田。鉴于在胜利村打出了我国第一口千吨产油井，1971年6月11日，“923厂”正式更名胜利油田。近年胜利油田原油产量呈递减趋势，2010年原油产量2734万吨，目前为我国第四大油田，陆上第三大油田。
