 “除了……之外，没有……”，特殊句型结构，中间加名词。两种表达形式同一意思。例如：

1)      Teachers have set up those obstacles for no other purposes than to challenge the students to overcome them.

（教师设置这些障碍没有其他目的只是为了挑战学生克服它们。）

     这个句子可以改成：

Teachers have set up those obstacles for no purposes other than to challenge the students to overcome them.

         2) They were given no other food than dry bread and water for their evening meal.

     They were given no food other than dry bread and water for their evening meal.

              (晚餐除了干面包和水外，他们没有得到其他的食物。)

3) Politics that disregard science and knowledge will not stand the test of time, and indeed there is no other basis for

    sound political decisions than the best available scientific evidence.

            （忽视科学和知识的政见是经不起时间的考验的，除了可获得的最佳科学证据外没有其他依据作出

        政治决策。）

这两个短语都可表示“不是别的，正是”的意思。下列三个句子两个短语都可用。

1）The middle-aged man whom we met at the gate of the library is no /none other than our new principal.

             （我们在图书馆门口遇到的中年男子不是别人我们的新校长。）

2) It was no/ none other than Tommy Traddles who told me this piece of information.

             （告诉我这段消息的不是别人正是这是Tommy Traddles。）

         3) The tall figure that you saw was no / none other than our manager.

               (你所见的那位身材魁梧的先生不是别人正是我们的经理。

不过，none other than 语气更强，表示惊奇、赞美、强调等语气时多用 none other than 。

         1）The tall figure over there is none other than the great mathematician, Bill Williams, himself.

              （那位身材魁梧的先生正是大数学家贝尔·威廉姆斯本人。）

         2）The winner of the speech contest was none other than Tom who doesn’t talk much in daily life.

                (这次演讲比赛的冠军竟然是汤姆，他平时不太讲话。)
