1)嵌入视频;

2)浏览索引;

3)嵌入动漫;

4)定制词汇;

5)复习检测;

6)标记文本;

6. iBook Author

Apple’s iBook May Revolutionize Our Educational System

Apple has just released the iBook2, the iU app and iBooks author. These new products have the potential to completely revolutionize education in the U.S. and beyond in the same manner the iPod, iPhone, iPad, and Mac Air have done in their respective markets.

With this latest introduction Apple has developed a tool that will forever change the way students learn. The new features that can be found in this exciting new educational tool are:

·         Embedded videos

·         A thumbnail index

·         Embedded animation

·         A custom glossary

·         Integrated review questions and quizzes

·         Ability to highlight any text

·         Study cards

All of these features are intuitive and will make the learning process fun. The study card system allows students to make cards from anything they highlight. Study cards can also be made from glossary words and even from their own notes. Students simply thumb through the stack of cards they have created. Like typical flashcards these cards have basic information on the front. Students then click on the bottom left of the cards to turn them over to see the more detailed response.

Videos embedded into the books are an excellent way to hold students attention and open up a whole new venue for learning. The animations are another great feature which provide a visual affect that is just not possible in a standard textbook.

At the end of each chapter there are short instant multiple choice quizzes and review questions. These are a great way for students to make sure they have absorbed the material they are reading and know what they must go back and review in more detail.

Apple has also released the iBooks Author, which is free and gives anyone the ability to create their own interactive books. The potential for this feature is huge. Teachers can now create their own guides to supplement the iBooks that they are using in the classroom. Students can even use the tool to write their own research papers and perhaps even publish their own book or training guide.

If I were the king of the education system in the U.S. my plan would be to integrate iBooks and social media into an extensive education reform program as follows:

1.    Implement a strategy that would ensure that iBooks were available for every curriculum in all K-12 classes within 2 years.

2.    Each school district would be required to come up with a strategy to make this reform effective including provisions to provide iPad2′s to all students who cannot afford them.

3.    Apple would be encouraged to initiate an education based non profit foundation with a mission to donate iPads to impoverished school districts. The foundation would also help subsidize the purchase of iBooks from publishers for the same distressed school districts.

4.    Require that all school districts benchmark the Finnish Education System (or a similar successful and proven programs) and implement the program within two years. Incentives would be in place to strongly encourage the integration of social media and online teaching and tutoring into the program.

5.    Social media would play a major role in the classroom and post classroom activities. Teachers and education specialists would teach students how to use social media for advanced learning. They would also be available after school for online coaching and tutoring. One potential use of social media would be, for example, using Google Plus Hangouts (with the appropriate parental supervision) for student tutoring sessions.

Do you believe that the ibooks concept represents the future of textbooks in our nation? What are some other ideas you can think of to use social media and eBooks for education reform?
