九年级高铭蔚    Giving compliments is a kind of knowledge. And it is also a kind of art. Praising is not flattery. But unsuitable compliments will also let people feel bad. People even think that you have some evil thoughts. So how can we praise others well?
Of course, in different countries, the attitude people treat the compliments from other people is different. The western people will accept the compliments and thank others. Because they think it is true. They don’t need to refuse. They think if they don’t accept the compliments, it will be an insult for others. But in eastern countries, people usually say that this compliment is not fit for themselves. They think people should be unobtrusive. It’s polite. But they’re the same about one thing——they don’t like fulsome compliment. So from these, we know that if you want to praise someone, you should be pure-hearted. Don’t be so exaggerated.
Giving others some compliments will make people happy. Everyone needs praising. If you can praise others well, people will hold you in respect. When you are praising someone, you are praising yourself at the same time. Unless, we lose nothing. Give more compliments to others, learn and try to praise others. The true compliment is not flattery. It is a kind of way you express your feeling and your emotion.
Making your compliments more specific will be much better. It makes the person feel like you notice him. For example, it would be better if you say, " That necklace looks really good on you."  It makes a bigger impact compared to "You look good."
These are actor’s lines in a Singaporean movie——I Not Stupid(《小孩不笨》), "When did you praise others last time? Do praising others is really very difficult? " Everyone needs to find his self-respect and confidence. Ladies in America like to praise their husbands and children. But in China , people think it is very vulgar. They don’t like praising their families. Compliments could change a clever child into a fool. It can also make an Autism sufferer to be a genius. Be careful when you are praising someone. Maybe your sentences will change his whole life.
