【原创】有关龙的英文表达（图）

龙（dragon）是一种传说中的生物（legendary creature），有蛇的（serpentine）或爬行动物的（reptilian）特点（trait），存在于很多文化（culture）的神话（myth/mythology）中。

龙主要有两种，一种是东方龙（oriental/eastern dragon），来自中国龙（Chinese dragon/loong）【见上图】；另一种是欧洲民间传说（folk tradition/folklore）中的欧洲龙（European dragon），与中国龙没有渊源关系。Dragon一词来自希腊语（Greek），含义是蟒蛇（python）。

通常，欧洲龙的身体像巨型蜥蜴（lizard）或蛇（snake），口里能喷火（emit fire from mouth），或者呼吸并喷吐毒药（poison）或冰（ice）。有长在背上（back）的蝙蝠式（bat-type）翅膀（wing）。头上有角（horned）。身体有羽毛（feathered）或有鳞片（scaled）。可以没有腿，也可以有两个、四个或者更多腿。有的有冠（crest）、鬃（mane）和奇异的色彩（exotic coloration）。没有前腿（front leg）的叫wyvern【这个词可能和worm同源】。现代欧洲龙长得像恐龙（dinosaur）。形象上，似乎东西方的龙有统一的倾向。

在西方传说中，龙是邪恶的（evil），只是在现代才出现例外。通常与好斗（agreesive）、好战（warlike）联系在一起。现代的欧洲龙往往很聪明（intelligent），能讲话（talk），会魔法（magic）。龙血（blood）有神奇的特点（magical property）。龙一般会保护一个洞穴（cavern）或城堡（castle），里面有黄金（gold）与财宝（treasure），并通常有一个英雄（hero）想杀（slay）它。

西方的龙会出现在纹章（heraldry）中，有不同的姿态（attitude）【就是position的意思】。朝向（face）观看者（viewer）左侧的叫to dexter；朝向右侧的叫to sinister/contourne；面对观看者的叫affronte；头转向观看者的叫guardant；向后看的叫regardant。描述野兽（beast）姿态的词汇主要有：后脚站立的（rampant）；向前直走（passant）；坐姿（sejant/sejeant）；下降的（cadent）；抬头俯卧（couchant）；奔跑的（courant）；睡觉的（dormant）；跳跃的（salient）；四足着地站立（statant）。

中国龙一般被描述为长的（long）、有鳞的（scaled）、蛇形的（snake-like）生物，有四条腿，每条腿上有五个爪子（claw）。在中国民间传说和艺术（art）中，龙是吉祥力量（auspicious power）的强烈象征（potent symbol）。龙王（Dragon King）与天气（weather）及雨水（rain/water）有关。与之相对的生物是凤凰（fenghuang/phoenix）。

西方有时用龙作为中国的国徽（national emblem），有时也是中国文化的象征。历史上，龙是中国帝王（emperor）的象征。皇位（imperial throne）叫龙椅（dragon throne）。龙爪的数量表示等级。清朝在国旗（national flag）上使用过龙。中国人喜欢用“龙的传人（Descendants of the Dragon）”来表明民族身份（ethnic identity）【蒙古人（Mongol）则用狼（wolf）】。

其它与中国龙有关的文化现象还有：中国历法（Chinese calendar）的龙年（dragon year）；四瑞兽（celestial guardian）之一的青龙（azure dragon）；龙舟（dragonboat racing）；舞龙（dragon dancing）等。

日本、韩国、朝鲜等也有与中国龙有渊源的龙，但脚趾数量等方面有区别【据说日本四个、韩国与朝鲜三个】。
