RAMADI, Iraq, Jan. 15 (Xinhua) -- Iraqi security forces on Sunday regained control of a government building in the city of Ramadi, some 100 km west of Baghdad, after fierce fighting with insurgents that left 12 killed and 22 wounded, a police source told Xinhua.
The security situation is under control after the retrieval of the building located in a compound inside the city's security headquarters, the source said on condition of anonymity.
Six policemen, including an officer, were killed during the insurgents' attack on the compound and 14 others were wounded, the source said, adding that a civilian was also killed and eight others wounded during the clashes.
The attack occurred around noon when two roadside bombs ripped through downtown Ramadi, the capital of Iraq's western province of Anbar, according to the source.
Afterwards, gunmen wearing police uniforms blew up their vehicle in front of the security headquarters and two of them broke in and detonated their explosive vests at the gate of the compound, paving the way for others to take control of the building which houses the counter-terrorism office, the source said.
The gunmen took positions on the roof of the building and exchanged fire with security forces for several hours, until troops shot dead five of them and regained control of the situation, the source said.
After the attack, authorities imposed a curfew on Ramadi and security forces launched a search operation looking for the escaping gunmen.
Insurgent attacks continue to happen in the once volatile Sunni Arab area west of Baghdad that stretches through Anbar province to Iraq's western borders with Syria, Jordan and Saudi Arabia.
Iraqi cities have gone through several attacks, including suicide bombings, since the U.S. troops pulled out of the country earlier last month.
