During a visit to Pakistan in December 2010, Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao and his Pakistani counterpart jointly announced the year 2011, which marks the 60th anniversary of China-Pakistan diplomatic ties, as the "China-Pakistan Friendship Year," and said that the two countries would carry out a series of activities to celebrate the friendship year.

2011 is a significant year in the development of China-Pakistan relations. The two countries have carried out more than 80 celebration activities covering politics, foreign trade, military, culture, sports, education, and other areas. With participants from across the two countries and from all walks of life, the activities have produced profound and far-reaching effects.

Frequent high-level contacts between the two countries have led their bilateral relations in the right direction. The two countries' presidents, prime ministers, and foreign ministers exchanged congratulatory messages on May 21, 2011, the exact 60th anniversary of China-Pakistan diplomatic ties.

Shortly before the anniversary, Pakistani Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani made an official visit to China, during which he met with Chinese President Hu Jintao and Jia Qinglin, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, and held talks with Wen. Gilani and Jia later attended a reception celebrating the 60th anniversary of China-Pakistan diplomatic ties.

Wang Chen, head of China's State Council Information Office, visited Pakistan in June, and attended a reception celebrating the 60th anniversary of China-Pakistan diplomatic ties together with Gilani.

In August, Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari visited China, attended the first China-Eurasia Expo, and met with Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang.

In September, Chinese State Councilor and Minister of Public Security Meng Jianzhu visited Pakistan.

In November, Wen and Gilani held a bilateral meeting on the sidelines of the 10th Meeting of the Prime Ministers of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, and reached broad consensus.

The two countries made significant progresses in the cooperation of the economic, trade, energy and other areas. In the first 10 months of 2011, the total trade volume between the two countries was as high as about 8.7 billion yuan, up about 24 percent compared to that of the same period of 2010.

The two countries launched the second-stage negotiation on reducing the tax of the China-Pakistan Free Trade Zone.

The two countries held the first China-Pakistan Entrepreneur Forum and the Industrial. Then Commercial Bank of China (ICBC)'s branch companies in Karachi and Islamabad held their opening ceremonies. The first session of the China-Pakistan Energy Working Group was also held in Beijing.
