Last Friday, Kofi Annan, the present secretary-general(秘书长), visited Beijing. He had talks with Chinese President Hu Jintao and made a speech at Peking University. Annan said his trip was “to promote UN reforms.” But many people are more interested in finding out who will replace him in his position.
Annan will leave office when his second five –year term ends on December 31st. Before that, the UN will decide who it wants as its next chief.
While visiting South Korea last week , Annan said that someone from Asia would take his place. There is a rule that says that each new UN secretary – general must come from a different part of the world.
Asian and African nations, including China , agree with Annan. Russia also agrees. They say no Asian has held the position for 34 years.
However, the US and Britain disagree. They say the most qualified person should be the next UN chief, no matter which country the person is from.
It is likely that the job will go to one of these four people: Former Polish President Aleksander Kwasniewski, reported to have supported from the US; Thai Deputy Prime Minister Surakiart Sathirathai; South Korea Foreign Minister Ban Ki Moon; Or Sri Lanka’s Jayantha Dhanapala, already working for the UN.
The new UN chief must get support from all five standing members of the UN Security Council (联合国安理会)——the US, Russia, China , Britain and France. He also has to be approved by the 191-member UN General Assembly(联合国大会)。

The longest train ever was more than seven kilometers in length. It had 682 cars and was pushed by eight powerful locomotives. The train traveled 275 kilometers through Western Australia, on June 21st, 2001.
Japan built the world’s first high speed train——the bullet train in 1964. When it started, the train could run at speeds of about 200 kilometers per hour. Nowadays high speed trains reach speeds of more than 300 kilometers.
