Birds and Beasts, Grasses and Trees

By Mingyun Wang

Translated by Wenwu Zhang

Please allow me issue a ban in the name of

Cuts and love: from now on, from this moment,

No one should use words below:

NO.1, "worse than birds and beasts";

NO.2, "who can be unfeeling like grasses and trees".

In Acapulco, a southern city of Mexico

When I'm having a meal, a crow

Picks up a bag of brown sugar and flies away.

I take the coffee cup off my lip lines,

And call the crow, which then comes back.

In this foreign place, tears fill in my eyes. I've seen

This kind of dark black birds in trees on both sides of Chang'an Avenue.

I've seen flocks of them, cold and disturbed;

The blackness over the white snow is solemn and respectful.

Perhaps they don't want to sing,

But speak to me.

From TV, I see, in a dry field of black Africa, a female frog

Saving a group of tadpoles with her head, croup, paws,

Even all the organs of her life.

She beats away sands and stones, and draws back

The fresh water, so that the tadpoles can come back to

The fairy tale of "finding mother".

In Copenhagen, while politicians around the world

Are arguing about energy saving and emission reduction,

A gorilla, who has just become a mother,

Hugs her baby and says to it, "away from human beings,

The farther, the safer."

Ah! I happened to encounter these animals, walking and looking for food in the world,

And coexist with them peacefully. I'm sad, for it's we, the human beings,

That have destroyed the valleys, pastures, and rivers.

I'm not Shennong that had tasted all kinds of plants,

But I know the names of 1,892 plants

In Compendium of Materia Medica:

Anderson Cirrhopetalum, Two-leaf Beadruby,

Slender Evodia [leaf], Chinese Dicliptera Herb, Arrowleaf Abelmoschus,

Gentiana hexaphylla, seven-leaf Japanese Thistle Herb,

Chinese Alangium Root, Glabrous Sarcandra Herb,  Mahonia fortunei......

While suffering, I sing them,

Whose bitterness comes from cracks in rocks, the sky and the earth,

And the years; from prehistory or Latin.

Like a poem that follows me,

Like a spell that makes me

Settle down into poems, these plants take roots and blossom,

And in tranquility, go into the dreamland.

Flocks of birds flying into woods, the land is full of sunshine and twitter.

Grass swinging in the wind, thousands of flocks and herds lie chewing.

These plants protect me and all living creatures.

I'll plant them in flowerpots, ridges,

And the grave of my grandma and grandpa.

I'll plant them on the paper,

And in the rare sleep. Even when ill,

I'll have a pot of cornflower in full bloom, encouraging me to recover.

Even when confronting death, I'll send the last fragrance of roses in my hands

To the lovely girl.

I know that I'm more humble and tinier

Than an insignificant grass.

Let's lay down our arms, sit

Under the trees, on the meadows, by the rivers,

Live in love, sing and play,

As bees put away stingers, deflower and make honey.

Please allow me revise the words

In the name of poems and poets.

From now on:

NO.1, replace "worse than birds and beasts" with "dear birds and beasts",

NO.2, replace "who can be unfeeling like grasses and trees" with "all weeds and trees are poems".
