A parable for our times
Once upon a time in a place overrun with monkeys, a man appeared and announced
to the villagers that he would buy monkeys for $10 each. The villagers, seeing that
there were many monkeys around, went out to the forest, and started catching them.
从前有一个到处都是猴子地方，一名男子出现向村民宣布，他将以每只十元的价钱购买猴子。村民了解附近有很多猴子，他们走进森林开始抓猴子。
The man bought thousands at $10 and as supply started to diminish, they became
harder to catch, so the villagers stopped their effort.
该名男子花了数千美元购买每只十块钱的猴子，猴子数量因此开始减少，而村民们也越来越难抓到猴子，因此他们不再热衷抓猴子赚这十块钱了。
The man then announced that he would now pay $20 for each one. This renewed the
efforts of the villagers and they started catching monkeys again. But soon the supply
diminished even further and they were ever harder to catch, so people started going
back to their farms and forgot about monkey catching.
该名男子随后宣布，他将出价每只猴子20美元。这又让村民们重新开始努力抓猴子。但很快供应量变得更少，他们几乎很难再抓到了，因此人们开始回到自己的农场，继续耕作，慢慢淡忘了抓猴子赚钱这件事。
The man increased his price to $25 each and the supply of monkeys became so sparse
that it was an effort to even see a monkey, much less catch one.

The man now announced that he would buy monkeys for $50! However, since he had
to go to the city on some business, his assistant would now buy on his behalf.
该名男子现在宣布，每只猴子他出价50美元！然而这时候他离开了，去城里办一些事，现在他的助手代表他继续从事购买猴子的业务。
While the man was away the assistant told the villagers. ‘Look at all these monkeys
in the big cage that the man has bought. I will sell them to you at $35 each and when
the man returns from the city, you can sell them to him for $50 each.’
这名男子离开后，助理告诉村民，先前该男子向你们购买，目前还在大笼子里的这些猴子，我每只用35美元卖给你们，等该名男子从城里回来，你们可以将它们以每只50美元卖给他。
The villagers rounded up all their savings and bought all the monkeys.
村民们汇集了所有的积蓄，向这个助理购买了全部的猴子。
They never saw the man nor his assistant again
他们从此再也没有见到这名男子和他的助理了。
and once again there were monkeys everywhere.
村子里又再次变成到处都是猴子的地方。
