Northeastern Ontario is well known as a mining centre for precious metals such as gold and copper. But there may be potential for other, less glamorous, minerals to give the region's economy a big boost.
Industrial minerals are being studied carefully in the area. Recently, Robert Calhoun, geologist with the Timings Economic Development Corporation, explained the potential of industrial minerals to members of the Northeastern Ontario Municipal Association (NAOMA).
Calhoun outlined the Capsulising Regional Industrial Minerals Project, which examines the potential for mining clay, slate, soapstone and silica in the region. All these minerals are in demand for their industrial and artistic value. It's a $2.5 billion industry in Canada.

The purpose of the report is to encourage small and medium sized enterprises to invest in industrial minerals.
"We would collect samples in second stage, and conduct drilling and sampling," he said. "Then we're doing studies to make sure these are marketable products.
"Industrial minerals is a tight business , if you are going to put new ones in the market, you're going to be going into someone else's backyard."
Calhoun said prior to this initiative, there hasn't been much study of industrial minerals in the region.
"A lot of people say there is no slate in Northern Ontario," he said. "There is a deposit south of TiTimingsnd on the Goldcorp property, but industrial minerals is not a stream for them.
"It is up to us to prove there is a market for slate and what it can be used for."
He said the slate found in the area has good colour, good quality and can be cut thin.
"A lot of people in TiTimingsnd South Porcupine have that slate in their backyard patios."
There is currently a facility that can process slate, but action needs to take place quickly, explained Calhoun.
"There is a processing mill in Matheson with the necessary facilities.
"The present owners looking to dismantle the mill. I think it is possible to market that mill and bring products in soon."
Calhoun said the study has also found a potential for rare earth metals.
"They exist in this area," he said.
Rare earth metals are used to produce items such as blackberries, iPhones, computers and flatscreen televisions.
"One problem is the control of this field by the Chinese," Calhoun said. "They have put production in the United States out of business. They undercut then so bad that they put them out of business."
