Running or cross-training at a gym or fitness club is great if the weather or other conditions prevent you from running outside, but before you join a gym, follow these tips to ensure you make a good choice.

Go for a test-drive.

The best way to determine if a gym is right for you is to get a guest pass. Try the machines and check out the classes that you would want to attend. Make sure you work out at the times you would normally go, so you'll know if the gym gets very crowded then. Pay attention to the atmosphere and the people, and make sure it's a place where you'll feel comfortable.

For example, some gyms limit treadmill use to 30 minutes. If your treadmill workouts are usually more than 30 minutes, then the gym's restrictions obviously won't work for you.
