A grieving widow said it was “like losing her husband again” after she received the wrong body for burial following a mistake by mortuary workers.
The family of Jamil Sheikh, a 79-year- old former railway worker, thought they had buried him at Mortlake cemetery in South West London.
But then they were alerted to the blunder by Hammersmith Hospital after another Sheikh family opened their coffin for viewing and discovered the wrong person inside.
The daughter of one of the victims, Sobia Sheikh, said: “It is disgusting, shocking. How can you make a mistake like that? You can get given a wrong pair of shoes, but not the wrong person to bury.”
The mistake occurred after mortuary workers sent the men, who share the same surname but have different first names, to the wrong funeral directors, despite tags on their bodies displaying their full names.
Jamil's body was returned to his family, who had to go through the whole funeral again with the right body, after the coffin they had buried at Mortlake was exhumed.
Sobia said: “My mother had to phone everyone again and tell them about the second funeral. It wasn’t just one or two phone calls; 40 phone calls.
The hospital has since tightened procedures and apologized to the families.
英国《每日邮报》7月4日报道：由于停尸房工作人员弄错了死者的尸体，死者的妻子悲伤地说“这感觉就好像又一次失去了丈夫”。
死者贾米尔•谢赫曾经是一名铁路工作者，去世的时候79岁。其家人原本以为谢赫已经在伦敦西南部的莫特莱克公墓入土为安了。
可曾想却接到哈默史密斯医院的通知说尸体搞错了，因为另一个也姓谢赫的死者家属打开棺材后发现里面的人并不是他们家的“谢赫”。
受害人的女儿索比亚•谢赫说：“这太可恶，太糟糕了。怎么可能犯这种错误呢？我们有可能买回来一双大小不一样的鞋子，但是怎么可能把人埋错呢？”
虽然死者身体上都附有他们各自全名的标签，但停尸房的工作人员还是在将尸体交给丧葬承办人时把两个同姓但不同名的死者搞错了。
真正的贾米尔的遗体被送回来后又要举行一次葬礼，而已经埋在莫特莱克公墓里的另一具尸体也要被挖出来。
索比亚说：“我妈妈得给每一位亲戚电话，叫他们来参加‘第二次’葬礼。那不是一个两个电话，而是四十多个。”
医院方面现在已经对停尸房的各项工作程序进行的严密地控制，也向两家人表示了歉意。
