pollute “污染”，多指有害物质使空气、水等污染，直接影响人体健康，名词是pollution。
1) The air has been polluted by the fumes from facoties and motor vehicles.
（空气已被工厂和车辆排放废气所污染。）
2) The sea is often polluted by oil which escapes from damaged or defective oil tankers.
(海洋经常被损坏的或有缺陷的油轮泄漏的油所污染。)
3) Scientists say that if pollution is not rapidly eliminated, the world will be a dangerous place for its inhabitants in decades’ time.
（科学家说,如果污染不能迅速消除,在今后几十年里我们这个世界会变成一个危险居住的地方。）
contaminate “污染”，指被不干净或有害物质污染，被污染物可指任何东西，名词是contamination。

tiant “污染”“腐蚀”、“败坏”、“玷污”、，指由于坏的条件使物质腐烂变质，也可用于表示玷污荣誉、名声，成绩等。名词仍是taint（污点；感染）。
1) The hot weather will taint food.
（炎热的天气使食物腐烂变质。）
（内容不好书会腐蚀年轻人的心灵。）
3) Blood doping, which tainted the triumphs of some Olympians, has at last been banned.
（血液兴奋剂玷污了一些奥林匹克选手的辉煌,最终终于被禁止。）
