得知印第安纳大学的性健康促进中心正在进行一项不同寻常的性学研究，我很高兴。他们在做一些开创性的工作，试图发现发现从未有人了解过的性爱秘密。性教育工作者和治疗专家一直对情趣玩具、润滑剂、对生殖器的意淫、避孕套的使用、阴毛去除等问题有着许多的疑惑。而在最终结论出来前，我们只能借助资料研究，尽管有时候资料能帮上些忙。但在政策宣传，论文写作，或者了解我们是否给出了（关于男男性交）可能给出的最精确地信息时，他们就不那么有用了。

最近，它们出版了《美国近期男男（同性或双性恋）性交情况》。此文首次出版在《性医学周刊》上，并在网上发行。性极客中确实有些古怪的人。

人们大多认为男男性交就是肛交。但在对近期性活动的调查中，只有不到百分之四十的性活动进行肛交，只有一半左右的人使用了避孕套。18到24岁的男性中攻占多数，而在30到39岁的男性中，受得数量比较多。同时，有百分之七十五的性活动进行了肛交。

年龄的不同还导致了其他差异。据调查，只有不到百分之二十的性活动发生在旅馆、公共场所或交通工具而非住宅内，年轻人更倾向于车震（或许是因为家里没有足够的私人空间），而40岁以上的男士和双性恋男士更喜欢旅馆。

  

最有趣的是60岁以上的男士大多认为他们的性爱很棒（同性恋中有80.8%，双性恋中有84%），而18到24岁的男同性恋更多的认为他们的性交并没有趣（11.9%）。同时，60岁以上的男士中，73%的没有性高潮。尽管我很好奇调查人员是怎么区分行高潮和射精的。

此次研究带来了意外收获：同性恋和双性恋有不同的性技能，而且固定性伴侣们并不总是选择肛交，这与人们一直以为的男男性交形式相冲突。这也意味着社会需要广泛努力促进性活动的安全，并使努力真正起作用。

I am so glad that the Center for Sexual Health Promotion at Indiana University is doing some amazing sexological research. They’ve been involved in some really groundbreaking work to discover how people have sex in more detail than anyone else has ever done. Sex toys, lubricants, self-image and perceptions of genitals, condom use, pubic hair removal- these are the sorts of topics that sex educators and therapists get lots of questions about. Until these papers came out, we’ve only had andecdata to work with and while that’s useful in some settings, it makes it hard to advocate for policy, write academic papers, or (for that matter) know whether we’re giving the most accurate info possible.

Today, they announced the publication of Sexual Behaviors and Situational Characteristics of Most Recent Male-Partnered Sexual Event among Gay and Bisexually Identified Men in the United States. It’ll be coming out in the Journal of Sexual Medicine and has been released online, and it’s a fantastic bit of sex geekery.

One of the most common assumptions of the sex men have with each other is that it centers on anal intercourse. But among the men surveyed about their most recent sexual experiences, that happened less than 40% of the time, and condoms were used about half of the time. Receiving anal was most common among 18-24 year olds, and giving anal was most common for 30-39 year olds.  Meanwhile, oral sex happened in 75% of the most recent events.

Other age differences also turned up. Just under 20% of sexual experiences happened somewhere other than in a home, like in a hotel, a public space, or a vehicle, and while younger men were more likely to have sex in a car (possibly from not having enough privacy at home), men over 40 and bisexual men were most likely to have been in a hotel.

Especially intriguing is the finding that more men over 60 reported experiencing high arousal (80.8% for gay men and 84.0% for bisexuals) and gay identified men ages 18–24 were most likely to report experiencing little or no pleasure during the event (11.9%). At the same time, 73% of men over 60 didn’t have an orgasm, although I’d be curious to know whether the survey distinguished between orgasm and ejaculation.

The most important takeaway from this research is that gay and bisexually identified men have a diverse sexual repertoire and that partnered sexual behaviors between men are not dominated by anal intercourse. This really flies in the face of some of the more common stereotypes about how men have sex with each other. It also means that safer sex promotion efforts need to be more comprehensive in order to be relevant.
