It is always a disappointment when you order a stylish bag online, and it turns out to be a grandma's purse when it turns up the next day. Many e-shoppers have become all too familiar with this feeling of being let down and have, in fact, given up complaining. But as an online shopping rookie, I was not yet quite ready to move on from wasting 200 yuan ($31.40) on a grandma's purse. 

  总是有这样令人失望的时候,当你想网上订购一款时尚的包包,结果第二天出现在眼前的却是一个老气横秋的小包。其实很多网购者都会很熟悉这种失望的感觉并且放弃投诉。但是对于一个网购新手来说,我还没有做好浪费200元钱在一个土气的小包上的准备。

On taobao.com, buyers can rate the products and services provided by retailers. Naturally, I did not give the granny purse a top-notch comment. I did give it a generous two out of three points, however, which was not unkind considering the bag looked nothing like the photos the retailer had posted on its online shop. 

在淘宝网上,买家可以评价卖家所提供的商品和服务,自然地,我不会给这个土气的小包一个一流的评价。然而,考虑到这个包包一点不像是卖家传到网上的照片,我还是很慷慨地给了它三分中的两分。

After leaving the comment I moved on from my disappointment, but it seems not everyone was prepared to do that. A couple of hours after I left the comment, I got a text message from an unknown number. 

评价过后,我还沉浸在失望之中,但是好像并不是每个人都会这么做。我评价过后几个小时,收到了一个陌生号码的信息。

"Dear, I am the sales representative from where you bought your bag a few days ago. You left a mediocre comment, and I am begging you to change it. I am only a sales assistant for the shop, and the shop owner will deduct 50 yuan from my salary when I do not get an excellent comment from customers. I am not from Shanghai and I barely make ends meet with my salary." 

“亲, 我是你几天前网购的包包的销售员,你给出了一个中等的评价,我请求你更改一下好吗?我只不过是这个店铺的销售员,如果我不能从顾客那里得到一个优秀的评价的话,店主就会从我的工资里面扣除50块。我不是上海人,我的工资才刚刚能勉强够维持生活。

 

I ignored the message for a couple of hours, and she sent another message begging me to upgrade the comment. She really made me feel like I was the bad guy bullying her, so I gave the shop an excellent comment for the grandma's purse. So I have now a guilty conscience and a grandma's purse. 

我不理睬它,几个小时后,她又来了另一条信息请求我给出更好的评价。她让我觉得好像我是坏人欺负她了似的,然后我就给了这个卖给我土气包包的店家一个优秀的评价。所以现在我买到的是一个难看的包包,并且还让我心里感到很内疚。

I felt bad for the girl who sent me the message, although I knew it could be a lie or a trick for retailers on taobao.com to get decent comments from customers. But I felt coerced into the situation, and I did not fancy being hassled by text messages for the next few days. I did not have a choice but to leave my mobile phone number with the retailer, as it was marked as important information to fill in for delivery. 

对于给我短信息的这个女孩我感觉很难受,尽管我知道这可能会是一个谎言,或者是淘宝网卖家想得到顾客好评的一种手段。但是我有种被逼无奈的感觉,并且我不敢想接下来的几天还在被这些短信息而困扰。我别无选择留下我的手机号给卖家,是因为这是送货单上要填写的重要信息。

 

I felt bad to have left a dishonest comment about my shopping experience. As a novice on taobao.com, I rely heavily on comments left by previous customers when making decisions on whether to buy a product. Now I cannot help but suspect that those customers had the same experience as mine and left positive comments under duress. 

我为我的淘宝留下不诚实的评价而感到羞愧。作为一个淘宝网的新手,我主要是依靠曾经的买家留下的评价来决定是否认购这个商品。现在我不禁地怀疑那些买家有着和我同样的经历,被迫留下了好的评价。

I called taobao.com to file a complaint, but its customer service representative told me such practices are very common and that there's not much they can do about it. Taobao.com, as the biggest C2C shopping platform on the Chinese mainland, should really step up its game to avoid such practices. A simple rule could easily put an end to such coercion - customers should not be able to re-evaluate the product after leaving their initial comments. 

我给淘宝公司打电话投诉,但是客户服务代表告诉我,这样的事情很普遍,他们也无能为力。淘宝公司,作为中国大陆最大的消费者对消费者的电子商务平台,应该插手这类事情避免再发生。一个简单的规定就能够很容易的终止这种强迫顾客在留下最初的评价后再次更改的行为。

Trust has become a major issue for e-shopping platforms, and such "comments after you buy" were initiated to establish an evaluation system to gain customers' confidence. It should not become a tool for retailers to lure customers into a shopping trap.

对于网购平台,信任是很重要的。购买后的评价最先建立了一个能够得到顾客信任的评价体系。它不应该成为卖家诱惑顾客掉入购物的陷阱的一种工具。
