A Comparative Study of Western and Chinese Family Values

【Abstract】Family values are culture’s core values and the primary caretaker’s world views, and are transmitted them to new members of the culture. In the paper, it presents some typical differences between Chinese and western family values from gender roles, marriage, family education, age-grading, collectivism and individualism. It aims to gain an idea of Chinese and western family values. To understand the different family values, communicators can achieve an appropriate cross-cultural communication. Cross-cultural communication is the important part of modern communication. And it is hoped that this discussion will help communicators to improve their ability of cross-cultural communication and achieve better communicational effects.

1. Introduction
As far as I know, Rudyard Kipling says in the “Ballad of East and West”: “East is East, and West is West; and never the twain shall meet.” With the technological development in transportation and communication, the Chinese and westerners that have quite different cultures respectively would meet so frequently nowadays in international settings. He never expected this situation. With different cultural patterns (including beliefs, values, attitudes, norms, customs, and material aspects), especially those from East and West, communicators have difficulties, breakdowns, misunderstandings and even conflicts and confrontations just because they fail to understand each other in their intercultural communication.
The study of intercultural communication is broadly-dimensioned. However, it is generally assumed that “values are significant to the study of intercultural communication because they are the core of our thoughts and actions. They are our convictions in the truth of something. They tell us how the world operates” (1994:86). Although each of us has a unique set of individual values, there are also values which tend to spread into every part of a culture. Cultural values are derived from the larger philosophical issues that are part of culture’s social surroundings. Cultural values are transmitted by a variety of sources – family, media, school, church, state, and so on –and therefore tend to be broadly based, enduring, and relatively stable. Family values are the most important parts of cultural values. In the paper, I want to continue discussing and probing the problematic interaction between Chinese and Western family values, since family is where one has the first experience of love, hate, giving, denying, and deep sadness. Above all, family is where people get their start in life, and family values are the first influences that contribute to the way in which people perceive and think about the world, and the man ner in which they live in the world. Family values can guide both perception and communication. That is, our family values get translated into action. Understanding family values helps us appreciate the behavior of other people.
