19世纪中叶，俄罗斯音乐出现了新高潮：成立了俄罗斯音乐协会，莫斯科和圣彼得堡均成立了音乐学院。由巴拉基廖夫、基姆、里姆斯基－科萨科夫（《雪娘》、《萨特阔》和《沙皇未婚妻》等歌剧）、穆索尔斯基（歌剧《鲍里斯·戈东诺夫》和《霍凡斯基之乱》）和鲍罗廷（歌剧《伊戈尔亲王》）等激进的年轻作曲家组成的“强力集团”成了音乐生活的中心。
19世纪的俄罗斯作曲家中有不少名字是值得永远纪念的。其中最有名的是彼·伊·柴可夫斯基，他创作了世界闻名的芭蕾舞剧《天鹅湖》、《胡桃夹子》和《睡美人》，以及歌剧《黑桃皇后》和《叶甫盖尼·奥涅金》等。
19世纪高水平的音乐文化稍后在伟大的钢琴家和作曲家谢尔盖·拉赫马尼诺夫和亚历山大·斯克里亚宾的作品中发扬光大。他们连同伊戈尔·斯特拉温斯基和谢尔盖·普罗科菲耶夫都是20世纪音乐的奠基人。谢尔盖·佳吉列夫请他们到巴黎举办“俄罗斯音乐季”的演出。他们的演出以大胆的创新和咄咄逼人的风格令欧洲为之倾倒。
